I think maybe £640/20 is a little on the high side. However it will soon be above £6.66 . The idea of licensing users of any drug is a good one I think. Rationing as well, both make sense. Trouble is an addicted person would not be phased by £6.66...

Conservatives are committed to responsible reform to enable real progress

"Our commitment to fiscal responsibility is fundamentally aligned to Progressive Politics.
There is nothing progressive about out of control spending, that the poorest end up having to pay for. And nothing fair about huge national debts that future generations are left having to pay for.
Fiscal responsibility allied to passionate belief in public sector reform is the only progressive route out of this debt crisis."

Less leg work for the police.

I wonder if the job of the police in arresting /catching criminals might be made easier.

Let me explain.

If it were possible to pass a law to the effect that serious criminals would face an extra year in prison for every day they failed to give themselves in, would this a) put them under more mental pressure to come clean and b) lessen the
workload of our over stretched police force?

Resilience doesn't re-build lives?

+++++++++++++++++++WHAT EXACTLY DO WE MEAN BY RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF CRISIS?++++++++++++++++++++++++++

JUST been reading a post on the Left-wing Think Tank blog Demos, by Beatrice Karol Burks about resilience in the face of crisis. To summarise, she seems to believe that communities in the face of crisis need to deal with it themselves, rather than expect 'big' government and insurance agencies to come… Continue

Smoking

Why don't we increase the legal age of smoking year on year by one year? Every one who is currently smoking and wishes to do so, despite the best efforts of all concerned, will be allowed to continue.

However the blossoming generations would never encounter the stuff in the main. There will always be a subversive element for sure but for the majority I am sure this would be a good step toward helping the world to kick smoking. How many acres of food production could be grown on Tobacco plantati… Continue

The Esher & Walton Open Primary - 5 thoughts on successful selection speeches

Today really was like the cup final for me with 6 high calibre candidates in Esher to talk about what they would do as our next parliamentary candidate and possible MP. Outside of party conference I have never seen so much public interest in politics, and the fact that it was right on my doorstep made it a perfect way to spend my Saturday. Selections normally happen so rarely, but there have been a spate of them across the country and finally this morning it was the turn of Esher and Walton.

European Empereur

Yesterday's Daily Politics Phillip Hammond was quizzed by Andrew Neil who ask him who he would like as EU President. Hammond first replied that he would prefer that this rule did not exist. Neil did not let him have that and pushed him to choose one. Now to a Conservative this is like choosing between a firing squad, electric chair or a paint of cyanide. He struggled to choose.

You see, for the Conservatives this undemocratic, almost dictator like unelected job of EU President; or as Napoleon w… Continue

The future

When is anyone going to mention the word enterprise? We have a tough ten years ahead but at the core of all tory and British aspiration is efficiency in all aspects of public life and the fostering of conditions which allow the creative industries of this country to be at the vanguard of future technology. we are well on the road to forgetting this hard earned legacy. Great Britain has been, for over two hundred years, the instigator of innovation, creativity and productivity. The way to make th… Continue

Gordon Brown's speech at #lab09

Gordon Brown's speech at conference. Starts off strong, but then just fades away.

The Labour Economic Plan: Unemployment soars again to almost 3m

George Osborne talks about Gordon Brown's U-Turns:

GORDON WATCH: This week's favourite Gordon Brown clip/ quote

Gordon's legendary ZERO per cent increase INGSOC double speak at its best!
Gordon Brown is urged to call an election. Brown calls the idea of calling a general election "Chaotic".
Brown has had some serious media training. Clearly they have told him not to do that thing with his chin and to smile more. Either that or someone is tickling him. Eitherway his smiles seem to come at all the most inappropriate movements, like some sort of involuntary reflex. Credit where credit is due, Gordon apologises, but why did it take so long? ">Tell us the truth Gordon you know you have brought us into Depression. "A weak currency is the sign of a weak economy, which is the sign of a weak government" Gordon Brown, 1992 ---------- ">This week it has got to be Gordon's soon to be infamous Freudian slip. Will this be the clip that students watch in decades to come, when they research "Brown the incompetent" the PM who far from saving the world, broke Britain? ">The original footage from 1985 with the legendary Frank Boff interviewing a very smug Brown boasting about his mole who provided him with leaks.

BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | Tory MP claims DNA record victory

A Tory MP has claimed a "small but significant victory for freedom" after police agreed to delete his DNA record. But Damian Green says he wants the same right extended to all innocent people on the police database - rather than "special treatment" for public figures. The shadow immigration minister was arrested last year as part of a Home Office leak inquiry but never charged. The Home Office ...

BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | Tories warn firms off ID scheme

The Tories have written to five firms bidding to supply ID cards warning them not to sign any long-term contracts. In the letter, shadow home secretary Chris Grayling says one of his party's first acts, if it wins the next general election, would be to scrap the scheme. He said he was urging the firms against large investments that may be wasted. The government says ID cards, being trialled in ...

BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | ID scheme is an 'embarrassment'

The government's handling of the ID cards scheme has been a "national embarrassment", the former shadow home secretary David Davis has said. Mr Davis said the project was "dying a death of a thousand cuts" after plans to make cards compulsory for some airport workers were dropped. But he complained the National Identity Register - for which he said there was "no need" - was still going ahead. ...

Alistair Darling 'to miss' UK borrowing target after record July deficit as tax take tumbles - Telegraph

By Angela Monaghan Published: 12:24PM BST 20 Aug 2009 The public purse is usually in surplus in July, when a large amount of tax payments are received, but the crippling effect of the recession was startling last month as tax receipts plunged. BBC NEWS | Politics | Economy is 'at risk' from Labour

A Labour victory at the next election would endanger economic recovery, George Osborne has said. The Tories say it is the only party committed to reducing debt levels which have become unsustainable under Labour, hitting confidence in the pound. Labour ...

BBC NEWS | Business | Rating agency warning on UK debt

A leading credit rating agency has revised down its outlook for the UK economy due to concerns about its significant debt burden. Standard and Poor's downgraded its view of the UK to "negative" from "stable" for the first time since it started analysing its public finances in 1978. Credit ratings are crucial as they help determine the cost of borrowing. It came as data confirmed that new ...
